About CDDU
The Curriculum Design & Development Unit is a collection of around 16 full-time equivalent staff within the Division of Teaching and Learning Services (DTLS) at Central Queensland University (CQU). The unit is responsible for providing the knowledge, skills and services necessary for CQU academics to analyse, design, develop and to some extent implement learning and teaching across CQU's many modes and campuses.
A major aim of CDDU is to collaborate with all of CQU to develop CQU as a leader in flexible and online education across a distributed campus network.

About the website
This website is implemented using MediaWiki the software used by Wikipedia, which means you can contribute to the ongoing development of our site. Like much of what CDDU is working on, this site is emergent. It will grow and change as we learn more about our context and how best to move it forward. We invite you to participate in that process.

The personal learning space of the kinesthetic Posted by on 1 October 2008 Let me show you my personal learning environment – The room is the size of a small theatre space. When I enter, there are several rostra, which I have placed intuitively, creating various levels. I can arrange these easily myself, and I do as I feel so inclined, before I can articulate my reasons in any [...] Don’t give up your day job Windows Posted by on 30 September 2008 My first week of intensive social software – Twitter, delicious (‘can’t remember where the full stops go), Second Life, Edublogs, Moodle, new websites, Connectivism course complete with bogged emails. All new. For someone who has an arts background, and is a self-confessed digital dyslexic (literally) that’s not bad. I’m telling all you geeks out there [...] Traditional vs Blended learning article Posted by on 26 September 2008 Just a quick post based on an article George Siemens mentioned in his blog post. From http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/09/080922155902.htm Strickland discovered that there were few statistical differences between the effectiveness of a traditional course delivery method and a hybrid one. The student satisfaction evaluation also revealed that students in the hybrid classrooms are more frequently confused regarding course requirements. [...] Design as reification, commodification and ideology: A critical view of IS design science Posted by on 24 September 2008 In an attempt to reignite progress on my PhD and prepare myself for attending the 4th Information Systems Foundations Workshop next week. The workshop title is “Information systems Foundations: Answering the Unanswered Questions about Design Research”. The workshop is organised by my PhD supervisor and will have a number of “names” from the IS [...] Posted by on 24 September 2008 My understanding of student-centered learning rejoices in a process that starts from the student’s perspective. As that clever ad that is cited in David’s weblog suggests, one’s judgement of a given situation may vary according to perspective. Student-centred learning, as opposed to teacher-centred learning, empowers the learner. The term is possibly an extension of Carl [...] What underpins student-centered education Posted by on 24 September 2008 After a long deal due to contextual and individual (i.e. mine) limitations, the first of the two PLEs@CQUni project’s research staff has arrived and started work. Welcome Jocene. An underlying principle of the PLEs@CQUni project is “eat your own dog food”. That is, if we’re going to be preaching the Web 2.0/Social Software mantra as a [...] Posted by on 21 September 2008 I am overwhelmed by cck08 emails. This is “moogle”, I think. Yey. But then I opened one with a really interesting link: http://www.innovateonline.info/index.php?view=article&id=550&action=synopsis Using the analogy of rhyzomes, Dave Cormier’s article- Rhizomatic Education: Community as Curriculum - is summarized as follows: The pace of technological change has challenged historical notions of what counts as knowledge. Dave Cormier describes an alternative [...] Posted by on 19 September 2008 To develop a tool which identifies potential issues with an online course we first need to establish what identifiable components combine to create a reasonable online course. A paper by Herrington et. al titled ‘Quality Guidelines for Online Courses; The development of an instrument to audit online units’ for ASCILITE 2001 states that there are three [...] What is research? How do you do it? Posted by on 19 September 2008 A previous post announced that a group of folk at CQUniversity are about to embark on a project/exercise with the aim of helping people develop ideas for research and turn them into publications. Any such process should probably talk about answers to two questions (amongst many others) What is research? How do you do it? [...] What should a LMS evaluation consider? Posted by on 14 September 2008 CQUniversity is in the process of evaluating two open source learning management systems for adoption by 2010. We’re at the stage of finalising the criteria to be used to evaluate the two systems. The purpose of this post is to outline some thoughts about how to evaluate the evaluation criteria. What should such criteria [...] REACT 2008 - An exercise in scholarship? Posted by on 9 September 2008 We’re about to embark on a little experiment in the scholarship of learning and teaching going under the tag react2008. The fundamental aim is to help improve the quality of papers we will write that are targeted for publication at EdMedia’2009. The experiment is going by the names of either react2008 or writers’ workshop. [...] Posted by on 7 September 2008 I launch into this as Eliza Doolittle into the drawing room of Henry Higgins. “I washed me face and hands before I come, I did”, but will I learn this language well enough to connect with the elite, digital society? Authored by jocene. Hosted by Edublogs. Hello CCK08 fellow participants Posted by on 7 September 2008 My name is Jocene. I am about to embark on some journeys - physical and epistemological - and all of them are taking me into this this area of “connectivism”. Presently, I live in Gembrook, in the south of Australia. The picture shows my little farm view after a recent snowfall. I am about to move north to [...] Choosing your indicators - why, how and what Posted by on 31 August 2008 The unit I work with is undertaking a project called Blackboard Indicators. Essentially the development of a tool that will perform some automated checks on our institution’s Blackboard course sites and show some indicators which might identify potential problems or areas for improvement. The current status is that we’re starting to develop a slightly better idea [...] Posted by on 30 August 2008 Just a quick informal and incomplete post to represent my thoughts before embarking on the literature review to do with the indicators project. In order to use some sort of automatic system to give an indication of the quality of an online course I thought I have a look at what components of an online [...] Getting started on Blackboard indicators Posted by on 28 August 2008 The unit I work for is responsible for providing assistance to CQUniversity staff and students in their use of e-learning. Which currently at CQUni is mostly the use of Blackboard. The current model built into our use of Blackboard is that the academic in charge of the course (or their nominee) is responsible for the design [...] Alternate foundations - the presentation Posted by on 28 August 2008 A previous post outlined the abstract for a presentation I gave last Monday on some alternate foundations for leadership of learning and teaching at CQUniversity. Well, I’ve finally got the video and slides online so this post reflects on the presentation and gives access to the multimedia resources Reflection It seemed to go over well but [...] Youtube. Friend or foe in higher ed? Posted by on 25 August 2008 An recent off-hand remark by an IT collegue at CQUniversity got me thinking about youtube. In passing they mentioned that youtube traffic represents a large portion of the data crossing our internet links which, of course, the university has to pay for and this cost is huge to say the least. I’d recently come across [...] Some alternate foundations for leadership in L&T at CQUniversity Posted by on 20 August 2008 On Monday the 25th of August I am meant to be giving a talk that attempts to link complexity theory (and related topics) to the practice of leadership of learning and teaching within a university setting. The talk is part of a broader seminar series occurring this year at CQUniversity as part of the [...] Posted by on 16 August 2008 Fitting in with my recent work with Online Learning Communities is Situated Learning that contends that learning takes place in the same context in which it is applied. A work colleague recently completed a project where a traditionally “dull” course was given a context in which the students could relate what they were learning to [...]

Downes, Stephen (video) Web 2.0 and Your Own Learning and Development Posted on 1 October 2008 20 minute video in which Stephen Downes describes and makes recommendations for creating PLE's and using Web 2 instruments. Atwell, G. The Wales-Wide Web | Personal Learning Environments Posted on 1 October 2008 Paper presented at Manchester conference. Excellent overview of the sorts of issues that keep surrounding PLE's, despite a simplistic dismissal of the importance of learning styles. Funderstanding - Vygotsky and Social Cognition Posted on 1 October 2008 Groovy little summaries of some dominant thought trends in education. It also describes assessment approaches for each school of thought. Mentions "constructivism", claimed to be the theoretical perspective underpinning PLE's. Cann, Alan J. Personal Learning Environments Posted on 1 October 2008 A power point by Alan J. Cann at Leicester University. Easy introduction to his idea of PLE's. Includes maps of Web 2 tools. Posted on 26 September 2008 Welcome to the Connectivism and Connective Knowledge Online Course support wiki. SLetiquette - Second Life Wiki Posted on 25 September 2008 SLetiquette is Second Life etiquette Posted on 25 September 2008 Ok, now that I’m spending more and more time in Second Life I figured I’d post some helpful little lessons on basic etiquette in Second Life (SLetiquette?) as there has been some things happening that have been bugging me. As well some personal notes on things going on in world for me. bvhacker - free to use bvh editing software Posted on 23 September 2008 bvhacker started life in November 2006 as a bvh file conversion tool for Second Life animation. Since then it has evolved into a quick loading tool ideally suited for preparing animation files for Second Life. Free Motion Capture Downloads - Motion Capture from Animazoo Posted on 23 September 2008 Congratulations! You’ve found one of the only places on the web where you can get free .bvh files. All we ask is that you credit us when you use anything commercially. 3000 students in one f-t-f class Posted on 23 September 2008 Not for everyone, but it seems to work (after one definition of the word)
