Background

Some time ago, staff in CDDU were discussing how we could leverage the reality aspects of Second Life (SL) for teaching materials. At the time we were working on the course ACCT19064 - Auditing & Professional Practice with Jenny Kofoed, the course co-ordinator, trying to find a way to spice up some case studies, which were entirely of written medium - boring…

We thought about how SL could be used to allow students to interact with each other through the case study story line, providing a more authentic/realistic experience. However, on our initial evaluation of SL, it was decided that the technology would become a significant barrier to the learning process. This was due to the learning curve involved in simple navigation amongst other things for this particular cohort of students. We had the idea instead of acting out the case studies in SL, and video recording it. This was as a replacement for the more traditional approach of hiring real actors to act out case studies and film them. The more traditional approach is very time consuming, and can be costly where more specific props are required. It wasn’t until later that we learned that this concept was known as machinima (machine cinema).

Pre-release Videos

Our first attempt. We were quite pleased with how this turned out, although there are a few rough edges to tidy up, its almost a complete first scene. Note the credits were a bit of fun from the team, and will be included at the very end of the production. This first scene introduces Hird & Co. the auditing firm that is the anchor for the auditing course, Jenny Kofeod the audit partner, and Michelle O'Laughlin the auditor and main character of the case.

This is scene 2 from the case study. This scene introduces Crebel Sports, Richard Burton the managing director of Crebel, and Richard's friendship with Jenny, the audit partner.

This is scene 3. This scene starts to unravel the ethical and legal dilemma that Michelle will be faced with as an auditor.
