Muddling about in the PLE space Posted on 12 November 2008 An attempt to understand a famous diagram in the PLE world. Col's Blog Posted on 21 December 2008 The Indicators Project. The Indicators project proposes to use statistical analysis of previously untapped data sources to assist in the design and evaluation of courses and programs at CQUni in a framework defined by the seven principles of good practice in higher education. The project will attempt to gather data from sources such as Learning Management [...] Posted on 8 December 2008 This is the first of what I hope to be a series of postings talking about data mining the learning management system at CQUni. It’s a project where I’m attempting to analyze previously untapped data that is held in the LMS database. Data like hit counts, resource utilization, discussion participation, uptimes etcetera can be obtained [...] Posted on 4 December 2008 Ascilite 2008 final day. The last day of the 2008 Ascilite conference started with a keynote from Gary Poole who spoke about learning homes and although he was mainly talking about physical spaces, a lot of the thinking is valid for online teaching. Learning spaces are any areas, physical or virtual where learning occurs. Below are [...] Posted on 3 December 2008 Day three at Ascilite 2008 http://www.ascilite.org.au/ Tuesday 2nd December. Another keynote presentation started the day with Piet Kommers talking about mobile and virtual presence in the learning community. A very entertaining and thoughtful talk on some higher-level aspects of technology in education. One of his quotes was “computers are the answer before the question has been created” warning [...] Posted on 2 December 2008 http://www.ascilite.org.au/ Monday 1st December marked the start of the sessions at Ascilite 2008. The keynote presentation was by Dr Michelle Selinger from Cisco. A little disappointing for me as it had a definite Cisco marketing flavor and I have a pet hate of advertising and I’ve been exposed to a lot of Cisco “rah rah” over [...] Posted on 1 December 2008 ASCILITE 2008. Exporting a Blackboard 6.3 course to Moodle Posted on 19 November 2008 Last night I attempted to migrate a Blackboard 6.3 course to Moodle as part of the CQUniversity LMS evaluation project. The course was an engineering course that was fundamentally a PDF repository with a structure of nested folders and some basic discussion forums. Moodle doesn’t support the Blackboard model and the migration tools provided with [...] Traditional vs Blended learning article Posted on 26 September 2008 Just a quick post based on an article George Siemens mentioned in his blog post. From http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/09/080922155902.htm Strickland discovered that there were few statistical differences between the effectiveness of a traditional course delivery method and a hybrid one. The student satisfaction evaluation also revealed that students in the hybrid classrooms are more frequently confused regarding course requirements. [...]
