The following is gathered through a process of looking at Moodle, Sakai and Blackboard to determine what is "unique" or specific about how they operate.

Blackboard
Structure
- Allows a selection of "pages" within the site to be the home page
- Allows course menu links include links to external resources and any page within the site
Content
- Each item in a content area must use the preset icons, difficult to change or make invisible
Access control
- Different approaches with different functionality is available to restrict access/viewing of the course menu links (very simple) and individual items in content areas (very complex and featured)
- Access to items can be restricted based on simple on/off, date, group membership, assessment.
