PLEs@CQUni
About the project
Over the next few years the Curriculum Design and Development Unit will be working with a range of CQU people to look at how CQU can adopt the notion of Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) into its learning and teaching.
This work is being funded by DEST. The initial proposal provides some background to the project.
What's happening
The project is currently going through the process of appointing staff. It should really take off ASAP.
Current work being done for this project includes
- A symposium examining how to harness PLEs to effectively support lifelong learning.
- A small but growing collection of resources around PLEs
- Some publications (all of our 2008 publications so far, are PLE related)
What's being "built"
The PLE project will build on and further extend existing work at CQU around the application of Web 2.0 technologies to move towards a more PLE oriented approach to e-learning. This previous work has included
- The use of Second Life to produce animations that illustrate important aspects of a case study for Auditing students. Part of a course re-design the reduced failure rates from over 30% to under 6%.
- A system that enables the use of any blog as an individual student journal and assists teaching staff in tracking, commenting and marking student contributions. Resources describing BAM include: the BAM project page which includes video of two initial presentations; and a paper describing the initial use of BAM.
- BAM's initial use was described as part of the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative's (ELI) Guide to Blogging.
- A very early experiment in using Web 2.0 applications but still having a course website as a focus for the course and fulfilling institutional needs. A very brief (and somewhat poor) explanation of the operation of the site is available in this video
- A project to use VoiceThread to support students in preparing and sharing a research poster in the T2, 2008 offering of PSYC13021, Special Topic in Psychology.

Project latest
- 1 Aug 2008: The Ps Framework presentation turned into a paper submitted to ASCILITE'2008
- This presentation uses the Ps Framework to explain some of the thinking about CQU, PLEs and learning and teaching which has informed the design of the PLEs@CQUni project. Video of the presentation also available.
- A blog post which contains a summary of the why, what and how of the project. Originally submitted to CQUni's Vice-Chancellor's Executive
