Print material innovation

Contents

Overview

CQU has a long history of being a provider of print-based distance education material in the form of study guides, resource materials etc.

It is assumed, that the focus within CDDU is on removing print from the mix and "going online". We see that as incredibly short-sighted. Instead, we see print materials as remaining an essential and useful part of flexible learning, blended and/or multi-mode learning.

Our interest, however, is how CQU's use of print-based learning material can be improved through appropriate application of curriculum design and technology. In terms of how it is designed, produced, distributed and its form and function.

A major focus is on investigating these possibilities.

Changes for T2, 2008

DTLS is currently working on some changes for print materials for T2, 2008. This is a work in progress which includes:

An initial and growing description of the changes for T2, 2008 is also available.

Examples

The T2, 2007 offering of the course NUTR19001, Nutrition was the first course to trial some innovations around print material. These changes were driven by a curriculum design process underpinned by constructive alignment. An excerpt of the materials is available (~4Mb PDF).

Some student feedback on the learning guide is now available.

A collection of 10 courses from the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Education is currently undergoing a similar trial in time for delivery in T1, 2008. There is a growing collection of resources associated with the project.

Typefi Publish - transforms Word/XML docs into richly formatted, brand consistent, InDesign and PDF docs.

Posted on 10 April 2008

This looks awesome, it's the next level to what we're currently doing with Word to InDesign study materials. With our current setup we have a blend of automated and manual formatting - with something like Typefi, it would be completely automated.
