Writers Workshop

About

The Writers workshop project is an attempt to develop a collaborative process that aids folk in developing and writing about ideas, research and scholarship in learning and teaching. Initially it is being trialed/developed with a small group of people from CDDU and the broader CQUniversity community. It's very much an emergent process of discovery, not an up front design.

The initial aim is to scaffold the writing of papers for EdMedia'2009. This has been chosen as a fairly common goal for those involved in the initial work.

This will not be a single workshop focused on a completed paper. Instead it will be a series of activities intended to help people identify, formulate, develop and write a paper for EdMedia'2009.

Some brief rationale for the design of this process is under development.

Origins

The writers workshop project is comes out of the EROS research group and builds on the ideas and work of the REACT project.

The Process

The workshop does follow a light, but fixed process. Meant to promote discipline, but also enable collaboration. Not everyone needs be up to the same stage, but people do need to follow the process.

The steps are:

  1. Get organised
  2. What is your idea and what type of knowledge will you create?
  3. Where does your idea fit?
  4. What is the publication destination like?
  5. What research method fits?
  6. Plan and do the work
  7. Write it up

With each of the above steps there are different situations where you are expected to make public your answers to these questions and open them up to comment from others. You are also expected to comment on the ideas and thoughts of others, within some pre-defined constraints.
